Detailing over 30 years of audio and video obsession
The MIDA Tapes
Over 50 audio cassette tapes were recorded between 1984 and 1990, featuring original radio “shows” and the MIDA Programming Network (MIDA, as in MIke and DAve Foy). This is truly podcasting before podcasting was invented.

Another installment of Critic’s Corner with David Foy starts off part 8 of the MIDA tapes. Dave reviews “Enter The Game of Death,” starring Bruce Le. This was one of many Brucesploitation films that surfaced after Bruce Lee’s death, and it’s odd that ten year old Dave is able to interpret it so thoroughly for the ripoff it was.
The MIDA Programming Network’s Comedy Review is next up, which apparently starred Mike and Dave Foy as street talking “wild and crazy guys,” and former hosts of “MIDA’s Crazy Crank Calls.” Here’s something that comes back to me as I write this – I’m pretty sure Dave and I had MIDA tapes that were actually destroyed by our Dad Tom Foy, mainly because they featured crank calls to friends and random people that were, well, technically against the law. Hmmm… I wonder if any of those tapes will actually show up as I continue to transfer audio from cassette to digital. Young Mike and Dave (between lots of belching) venture into the bathroom and attempt to contact one of MIDA’s late characters, Serge, who apparently was drowned in the toilet.
Next is F.U.N.N.Y. News, starring the bantering Lester Speck and Jose Aferlea. The high point is Lester and Jose’s interpretation of Sesame Street’s Oscar’s Book, and the show’s final moments being interrupted by our Dad, Tom Foy, who announces the time of 8:00 PM. You see, it was a Thursday night, and time for our favorite TV program… The Cosby Show!

Kicking off Part 7 of The MIDA Tapes is another episode of FWA Update, with host “Mad” Mike Foy and guest “The Sole Survivor” David Foy. Dave discusses his thoughts on being World Heavyweight Champion and wrestling itself, as well as opponents he’d beaten in the FWA.
The National Wrestling Update with hosts Mike Foy and David Foy is next up, “a show that brings the news of all the major wrestling leagues to you.” Oh yeah. It was the 80s after all, and pro wrestling was huge. Listen as Dave and I deliver news about… massive name dropping here, but hey, those were the days… The Rock and Roll Express, The Midnight Express and Jim Cornette, Gino Hernandez, Gentleman Chris Adams, Hulk Hogan, “Nature Boy” Ric Flair, Tito Santana, Brutus Beefcake, Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, Wendy Richter, Ole and Arn Anderson, Magnum T.A., Nikita Koloff, Krusher Kruschev, Ivan Koloff, Rick Martel, The Road Warriors, Rick Rude, The Grappler, and The Von Erichs. We covered news of the WWF, the NWA, WCCW, and the AWA, based on our TV watching AND magazine reading apparently. We give credit to all the big mags of the day, many of which Dave and I actually subscribed to – Pro Wresling Illustrated, Wrestling Eye, The Wrestler, and WWF Magazine. Ah, the 80s!

Still hovering around 1986, part 6 of the MIDA Tapes begins with “Sports Talk” and program host, Michael Foy. News of the 80th Street Hockey League kicks off the program, with stats reported for “Mad” Mike Foy, Demolition Demattei (Michael Demattei), and our grade school classmate Zandro Arcilla, as well as my brother, Dave Foy. News about title holders in the Foy Wrestling Alliance is also covered – as “Dirty” Dan Bradwell (Daniel Bradwell, a friend of ours from our block on 80th street), is listed as Intercontinental Champion and “The Sole Survivor” David Foy is listed as the World Heavyweight Champion. At the end of that show, it’s interesting to note that I had the foresight to record the date… February 1st, 1986.
The next program featured is “Critic’s Corner,” with host David Foy. Dave, at all of 10 years old or so, reviewed Rambo: First Blood Part II, which was no doubt a HUGE film in the 80s and wildly loved by all of the other kids we knew. Have no fear. There are other episodes of Critic’s Corner to come during future installments of The MIDA Tapes!
“The Sole Survivor” David Foy is guest host on an episode of FWA Update. Dave’s young interview skills are put to the test as he attempts a phone interview with Wilson “The Dragon” Chong, but can’t get through Wilson’s brother, “Wild” Bill Chong. Both brothers make themselves unavailable for interviews, and you can hear the utter disappointment in Dave’s voice as they sound like they are having fun without us being present!
Closing out part 6 is a commercial from Michael and David Foy about commercial-free programming on the MIDA Programming Network. Too funny!
